PANEL :
The future of refugee and migrant children in the face of the education crisis
Out of 22.5 million refugees, more than half are under 18. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), only 50% have access to primary school. “Failure to provide education to 6 million school-aged refugees can be extremely damaging, not only to individuals but also their families and societies, perpetuating cycles of conflict and further forced displacement. The consequence is lost opportunities for peaceful and sustainable development in our world. »
A disturbing new report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has shown that regardless of the country in question, learning opportunities are drastically reduced when children are forced to leave their homelands. Removing barriers related to education is therefore crucial, especially when it comes to the refugee crisis in Syria. (This was in 2018)
Indeed, in more than five years of war, the fighting in Syria has left an estimated 4.8 million registered refugees, half of whom are children. The experts who spoke at that panel were invited to deliver pleas and solutions to optimize the financing of the millions of refugee children left without education.
